The day long, and a holy rest.

O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen,
and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.
Then in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest,
and peace at the last.
Amen.

      1. I think I might have first heard it in Liberia. There were some Episcopal missionaries there who often said the offices, and it makes sense that they might have included this — being the creative sorts they were.

  1. Newman was an elegant writer. That’s beautiful.
Adam and I have a new prayer we recite together before our evening meal:
Lord Jesus, be our holy guest,
Our morning joy, our evening rest.
And with our daily bread, impart
Thy love and peace to every heart. Amen

It’s very peaceful to have this memorized and say it daily.
