The moon was a golden petal.

This poem surprised me by not having any mention of green leaves or grass. It describes a morning moment so succinctly, I think I might remember it, especially if I were watching the moon at dawn… Otherwise, maybe not! Because it may never happen that I have the opportunity to know this scene as more than a poem, I thought it best not to wait to share it.

GREEN

The dawn was apple-green,
The sky was green wine held up in the sun,
The moon was a golden petal between.

She opened her eyes, and green
They shone, clear like flowers undone
For the first time, now for the first time seen.

-D.H. Lawrence

  1. This is so lovely. DH Lawrence wrote some very memorable poems describing animals and flowers, but i never knew he had written this evocative one. I am very fortunate to have a view of the setting moon from my verandah. It sometimes happens when i get up to let the cat out at dawn that the full moon is setting memorably behind the hill..
Thank you for sharing the dawn moon poem:)

  2. I hadn’t seen this, but now I do. Thank you, Gretchen.

P.S. Unlike Jo, I have a back porch from which I can see the moon through the trees late, late at night from my back porch as I wander through the house. It’s one of the blessings of being sleepless, that and reading, or trying to pray…

  3. Fascinating! A green dawn… trying to remember why this makes me think of Narnia, one of the ladies, maybe the one at the end of Caspian’s voyage who welcomed the dawn and its stars over the sleeping bodies of the enchanted sailors?
