I love Wyeth — not we don’t agree on winter!

I prefer autumn and winter myself, enthusiastically! I never understand why, when January comes, people are pining for spring when winter has barely begun. I love the bare silhouettes of trees and shrubs even though I love the green of conifers among them. I even love all the browns in the landscape. I love being able to see lights in the windows of neighboring houses that are hidden from view once leaves appear on trees again. I love sweaters and wool blankets, early nightfall…and I could go on and on. Must mention no ticks, no flies, no mosquitos. I guess the only downside to winter for me is the risk of water pipes freezing.
I think I’m probably in the minority.

This is an appealing quote. There is wisdom in it. Each season thrills my heart in different ways; however, Rocky Mountain summers blooming from the bone beauty of winter is my favorite time of the year.

Those blooming summers (and your lush vegetable gardens!) are what is “under it all” in winter. I like to think about that. Seasons are beautiful or at least tolerable as seasons, in large part because we know that they will change again, in a few months.

I can almost feel the icy wind ripping at that poor fellow’s cloak ( if that’s what he has. It looks like an unusual sort of garment.)

I like to try and enjoy all the seasons as a gift – as long as they behave as they’re supposed to! It’s been nice having snow, although the rain today and warmth tomorrow will soon put paid to that.
I like Wyeth’s admission that there is something beneath the “dead winter”, that it’s not really dead at all!

It is a beautiful quote and there is a lot of truth in it. I do love to see the bare trees, they are more interesting to see the structure of the tree. I love winter storms (if I’m inside and the heat is one), I love to listen to the heavy rain – but I don’t really like to be cold. I think that’s my main “complaint”. But winter in California is certainly something different than the same season in Alaska. I’m not sure I would do well with those long dark hours.

I feel the same way about rain and cold… And glad I don’t live in Alaska!
