KEEPING THINGS WHOLE
In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.
When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.
We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.
–Mark Strand
Lovely. It brings a question to my mind. Do I move because I am fractured and need to be made whole?

I read the first line of this poem and thought, ‘This is Mark Strand!’ I haven’t read this poem in a long time, but it used to be one of my favorites. Thanks for bringing it back to me.

Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything

I loved teaching Mark Strand’s poems to my classes years ago, and this was a favorite! It made them think.
