Keeping Things Whole

KEEPING THINGS WHOLE

In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.

When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.

We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.

–Mark Strand

  1. I read the first line of this poem and thought, ‘This is Mark Strand!’ I haven’t read this poem in a long time, but it used to be one of my favorites. Thanks for bringing it back to me.

    Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”
