Setting up false devils.

“Idolatry is committed, not merely by setting up false gods, but also by setting up false devils; by making men afraid of war or alcohol, or economic law, when they should be afraid of spiritual corruption and cowardice.”

-G.K. Chesterton, in the Illustrated London News, 1909

  1. This reminds me of a line — the heart, really — of Luther’s explication of the First Commandment: “the confidence and faith of the heart alone make both God and an idol.”

His point: that in which we place our ultimate trust becomes our God. There are no atheists; there only are believers in the one, true God, and believers in false gods.
