My latest garden friend is this Umber Skipper who skipped around all of the zinnias as they waved on their long stems in the breeze… until he found the bouquet I was cutting, at which point he kept coming back to drink at a the more stationary offering of nectar. That was when I could focus on him long enough to find out his name and get a picture of his beautiful wings, and even his body hair.

He’s a charmer, Gretchen. And the zinnias are wonderful.

Skippers are so hard to photograph, but they will linger on tasty flowers. I enjoyed seeing the zinnias, too. They were a mainstay of my grandmother’s cutting garden.

Oh! I almost missed the moth. Great photo!

From what I understand, a skipper is not exactly a moth or a butterfly 🤷♀️

I also thought this was a moth so I looked it up to find that the skippers are considered an intermediate form between moths and butterflies. How interesting is that!! Your zinnias are lovely!

I’ve learned so many things from having a “pollinator garden.” I don’t know if I ever heard of a skipper – or saw one? – until my new landscaping began to bloom.

How beautiful! I took out the last of the zinnias here yesterday, and miss them greatly. I rarely cut them for bouquets, imagining all the little critters that might want to dine there.
