Drunken with the fatness.

O Lord, Thy mercy is in heaven,
and Thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

Thy righteousness is as the mountains of God,
Thy judgments are a great abyss.

Men and beasts wilt Thou save, O Lord.
How Thou hast multiplied Thy mercy, O God!

Let the sons of men hope in the shelter of Thy wings.

They shall be drunken with the fatness of Thy house,
and of the torrent of Thy delight shalt Thou make them to drink.

For in Thee is the fountain of life,
in Thy light shall we see light.

    1. About the translation, in the sidebar of the blog home page I keep this note: “Psalms quoted are from The Psalter, translated from the Greek Septuagint by the Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Boston, Massachusetts, 2007. The numbering of the Psalms in the Septuagint differs from that found in Psalters and Bibles translated from the Hebrew.”

I usually copy the text from a “pocket” edition of the Psalter of which there’s a photo here: https://gretchenjoanna.com/2021/04/09/as-with-marrow-and-fatness/

    1. Yes, and the 35th in the Septuagint- see my reply to Beth.

I receive the mountains as a symbol in the fuller sense, as sacramental in the manner of all creation, because the Holy Spirit “fills all things,” at the same time being transcendent.

The Septuagint- which is what the New Testament writers knew – is full of surprising images that often make me think, “Wait – I don’t remember hearing that before!”
