Luxury without guilt.

Having time and strength to do my housework properly is a great luxury. I felt that so much the last couple of days, when there were no other duties calling, and nothing urgent to distract me. First I worked at sweeping and organizing my garage. The question remains: Will I ever be able to fit my car in there?

It would be nice, but having no attic, basement, laundry room, pantry or storage shed, I use my garage for everything from firewood and kindling to beach toys and line-drying clothes; lots of gardening tools are stored there, and big pots that don’t fit anywhere in my kitchen. If I have many more days of focused thinking, maybe I will figure out how to arrange the stuff more efficiently. It could happen!

Today, more rich gifts were mine. I mostly cooked and worked in the kitchen, with the door open to the rain outside. Bliss. Eventually I put a large batch of experimental flax crackers into the dehydrator. We will see how they come out tomorrow, after 24 hours of dessication. I was trying to replicate the crackers sold under the Flackers brand, that have cinnamon and currants in them. But then I added three other kinds of seeds: sesame, chia and pumpkin.

Can you see the Thanksgiving cactus in the background, beginning to bloom?

I had already taken a morning walk, with very light rain falling on me off and on. The extravagant blessing of the heavens all around me, wetting everything and making us shine.

One thing nice about using the dehydrator for crackers is, I could go off and leave them in there, which I couldn’t have done if they were baking in the oven. So I put on my rain jacket again, and took a second walk about 4:00.

The skies were clearing. I walked westward that time, and saw different sights. Like the cleanest eucalyptus leaves ever:

Rain is not in the forecast for tomorrow, but housework is. Truly it’s neverending, and I hope my feeling of leisure will hold out for another day, while I prepare for a visit from my older son, whom I call Pathfinder. Last time he was here he helped me make progress with the Garage Project, but I’m happily looking forward to whatever we do together. Rain or not, I expect showers of blessing.

Plumbago in the neighborhood

  1. Having time and strength to do my housework properly is a great luxury. This is so true: while I have the time, during my knee recuperation period I simply do not have the strength to do more than a little housework each day – and it shows! It makes me realise how much we get through daily (usually) without seemingly making an impression! How lovely to have your son coming to visit 🙂 My daughter flew up from Cape Town recently to assist me for a couple of days … such bliss! I like your photograph of the bridge and am pleased to say that our indigenous plumbago is also coming into bloom now 🙂

  2. Rick says that about my garage on a regular basis. Of course, one of his bikes and the lawn mower and spreader are in there. We negotiate! Your cracker look just fantastic. I hope they are as good as they look — I expect a full report! You are surrounded by so much beauty. I know it’s hard work beauty, but it’s lovely.

  3. Oh the continual blessings you show us so easily found, if we just open our eyes to them…. You, my dear, have heaven on earth there, but I suppose you would look out my window here and say..” Merri, this is a glorious gift of God for you to look out on the Big Woods of Little House books, and see the paths to the lake below and one above too at St Olaf College… you would SEE all this.. and you are making ME see what is around me too…… i love your garage.. heee hee and a son who will come and HELP you wow.. heaven sent for sure…… and those crackers.. I reach for one.. with my coffee now. Thank you for, as always, you opening our eyes to what is right in our own backyard… I simply really adore that huge tree with the vine around it….. it reminds me of Dad and me….. he loved the vines on our Lodge at our family resort mom and dad and I ran for our ten year bliss until mom passed…. then thirty more years ..dad ran it and things changed but.. we had our golden time..and that red vine on our tree for ten precious years….. PRAISING GOD WITH YOU for bringing me that memory today and opening my eyes to the all good GOD.. Much Love Merri

    1. Early in our marriage, which was early in the days of average people drinking herbal teas, my husband and I would drink one called Eu-Cha-Mint, which included eucalyptus along with chamomile and peppermint. Later on, I think eucalyptus was reported to be not that good for us to ingest…? I don’t want to look it up right now. Anyway, we had stopped with that combination by then. But it is a wonderful scent!

  4. The flax crackers made in a dehydrator sound intriguing. I hope they are a success. Housework truly is neverending; sadly energy is 🙂
    Enjoy your time with Pathfinder.
