How did the rose
Ever open its heart
And give to this world
all its beauty?
It felt the encouragement of light
Against its being.
Otherwise, we all remain
too frightened.

That is so beautiful. Does this beauty grow in your garden? I noticed the first peony of the year in my garden this morning.

I used to have roses in my garden, but it’s very hard to keep them looking nice in this micro-climate without the use of toxic chemicals, so I am currently rose-less. But in the past I used to roam the neighborhood at this time of year and take pictures of all the beautiful specimens, which is when I found this one pictured. I understand that peonies don’t thrive in our Mediterranean climate because they need colder winters. One more reason I love reading blogs like yours!

That’s a lovely rose!! At first glance I thought it was a peony.

What a lovely poem to accompany the image of the rose. I may take it and read it to my roses. They are so beautiful just now, all frills and unfolding petals and fragrance.
