O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen,
and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed,
and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.
Then in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest,
and peace at the last.
Amen.
-John Henry Newman

This is in one of my favorite D.E. Stevenson books and was said at my husband’s funeral service. It is very beautiful.

I remember this, but I can’t say from where. Thank you for reminding me of such gracious words.

Kristi at Thicket House says it’s in one of her favorite D.E. Stevenson books – would you have read it there? I haven’t read any of her work.

I think I might have first heard it in Liberia. There were some Episcopal missionaries there who often said the offices, and it makes sense that they might have included this — being the creative sorts they were.

It is in Sarah’s Cottage, the sequel to Sarah Morris Remembers.

Newman was an elegant writer. That’s beautiful.
Adam and I have a new prayer we recite together before our evening meal:
Lord Jesus, be our holy guest,
Our morning joy, our evening rest.
And with our daily bread, impart
Thy love and peace to every heart. Amen
It’s very peaceful to have this memorized and say it daily.

That is a wonderful prayer, Mary Kathryn — it sounds familiar, but I don’t think it has ever been said in my house 😉 I might change that very soon!
