Dwindling away.

NOW

The longed-for summer goes;
Dwindles away
To its last rose,
Its narrowest day.

No heaven-sweet air but must die;
Softlier float,
Breathe lingeringly
Its final note.

Oh, what dull truths to tell!
Now is the all-sufficing all
Wherein to love the lovely well,
Whate’er befall.

-Walter de la Mare

  1. It’s only been the last few years that I’ve not wanted to see summer’s end, even while rejoicing in every cool morning and earlier dusk falling. I guess I’ve become a lover of every season. “Whate’er befall.” Reading his lovely poem took me back to elementary school where I’m sure we had to memorize at least one of his poems!

  2. The “longed-for summer” perfectly expresses our desire to live each summer day to the full knowing how short the season is here. I remember memorizing de la Mare’s “I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky.”
