“Idolatry is committed, not merely by setting up false gods, but also by setting up false devils; by making men afraid of war or alcohol, or economic law, when they should be afraid of spiritual corruption and cowardice.”
-G.K. Chesterton, in the Illustrated London News, 1909
Excellent, excellent quote, GJ. Thank you!

He sure did know how to get to the heart of things with a few well chosen words.

I’ve been thinking about this topic lately. It is very important not to forget this!

Excellent quote. That’s so true, nowadays we tend to be more concerned about the appearance, the symptom, rather than the root problem.

This reminds me of a line — the heart, really — of Luther’s explication of the First Commandment: “the confidence and faith of the heart alone make both God and an idol.”
His point: that in which we place our ultimate trust becomes our God. There are no atheists; there only are believers in the one, true God, and believers in false gods.

Oh man, isn’t that the truth! Good reminder.
